Do your teachers need a personal trainer?
By Aileen M. Owens
Teachers sometimes need support when it comes to their classroom and some help with technology as well. By partnership with Duquesne University Instructional Technology Department, teachers were able to get one-on-one help with technology. The program is meant to help teachers before, during their breaks, and after school; teachers are also required to meet 45minutes weekly. Not only does the program help teachers with technology but it helps teachers target areas in what their students need help on. The partnership helps by brainstorm in ways to enrich the lesson by researching available resources, technology, and other instructional strategies that can increase learning for the students and give teachers the chance to teach the concept in a new way. After the teachers finish the project and like the results they would immediately would begin a new project.
Duquesne University, came up with a Student Internship Program for Instructional Technology, the internship is meant to help match the teachers needs in by identifying the students skills. There were many rewarding stories by having interns helping in schools. An example was using word to create an animal project. The teacher and intern were able to see the areas of difficulty students would have. One of the problems was changing the font, color, and size; what the intern identified was that students would get frustrated but they were missing the first step which was highlighting the word. So, what was decided was to create a game were students were divided into groups then asked question in how to use word or other computer programs. This program helps teachers get support and training in were they most need it, in the classroom.
I think any teacher would appreciate having another pair of hands to help the students get the best education. I would like to have an intern in my class that would be able to help me with the technology I would use, and to help me target the areas in were the student needs the most help in. It would also be a good idea to have another person help enrich the curriculum.

"No man is an island" is definitely true for everyone, including teachers. This is a great way for teachers and interns to learn from each other, and to help this university know what kind of skills and knowledge are relevant to the classroom so they can teach them to their interns.
ReplyDeleteThis would be a great program that if schools could be involved in, and probably wouldn't require much cost since it would involve the input of student interns and not expensive consultants. The only issue I could see with this program is that the time allotted for teachers is generally not that abundant, and the times they meet with the student interns would have to be convenient for everyone.
I would appreciate any extra help in the classroom when it comes to technology. I am barely starting to learn about how to incorporate different aspects of technology in the classroom, so there is still a lot that I do not know. Getting some kind of assistance would benefit not only me but my future students as well. It is good that the teachers in this program are required to meet for 45 minutes a week. The teacher should not be handed all the extra help, the teachers should work towards bettering themselves as well. A program like this would help teachers incorporate more technology in the classroom because they would have the extra help if they needed it.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great program. Like I have said in a previous blog post of mine, no teacher should do it alone. We all need help and teachers need it especially because they hold so much responsibility. We cannot expect teachers to know all there is to know about education education and technology. This type of continuing education for teachers ensures that they are up-to-date with technology. As we all know, technology changes at almost lightning speed, it is important that teachers keep up with this speed. Another great aspect of this program is that it is flexible enough for the teachers to accommodate it in their schedule.
